Musical Autobiography

I have been exposed to many different cultures throughout the years. I have been to a few countries and many states far from South Carolina where I have grown up. Two summers ago I visited my boyfriend in his country, Germany. While I was there I was introduced to all sorts of German Music from German Rap to the church music. I fell in love with the pop music and now my Ipod is full of German music. Some of his friends even taught me popular nursery rhythms and famous patriotic songs.
During the fall term, I took the Introduction to German with Mirko who absolutely LOVED to listen to German Muisc. I wrote down pretty much every song he showed us on YouTube. It made the class even more interesting by relating what he taught to German Music. Little did he know he was opening a whole new world of music to me that I would grow to love.
When I traveled to Ecuador back in 2005 on a mission trip, we traveled all throughout Quito sharing the gospel and hanging out with kids throughout the villages. We visited churches where the pastor and the congregation would sing gospel songs for us in Spanish. We had translators that told us what they were singing and the meanings behind their songs. Although we did not understand every word of what they sang to us, it touched us deeply knowing that they were singing to the Lord and we shared that connection with them. It was a powerful experience I will never forget knowing we sang praises to our God in two different languages that meant the same thing.
One of my favortie places to eat in my home town is called El Mex which is a Mexican Restaurant. I love to go in there with my friends and enjoy good food with great music that comes along with it. I have been eating at this restaurant for years now and it never gets old. I do not speak fluent Espanol so it is really difficult to understand what they are singing about like my experience in Ecuador. So, I simply ask our waiter at times what the song is about to kind of get an idea of the background.
I absolutely love learning about different cultures and visiting new places and I hope to gain a broader perspective on the cultures we will be learning about. I am excited to see where this class goes from here!

  1. Yea! I'm glad you're excited! We're going to be discussing traditional Ecuadorean music (the stuff from the Andes mountains) later in the term--it will be interesting to see if any of it sounds familiar to you.

You taking the next semester of German in the spring, yes? I can only imagine how much fun a Mirko class must be.... :-)
